Routesetter
Regular Setting Duties
- Participate in up to three (3) routesetting days per week with the routesetting team, which will consist of eight (8) scheduled hours per day with the flexibility to run over when necessary.
- Setting days include the following:
- Setup and breakdown tasks
- Stripping walls and sorting holds, bolts, and screws
- Setting and forerunning rope routes and boulder problems across the full spectrum of difficulty levels, styles of climbing, and movement patterns.
- Engage in a productive exchange of feedback on quality, style, and difficulty of routes and problems, and of the setting process as a whole.
- Must utilize all tools and safety systems in a manner consistent with their training, manufacturer’s recommendations, and industry best practices.
- Not responsible for providing any routesetting equipment beyond personal climbing equipment.
Events & Competitions
- Participate in the setting crew for any USAC or local climbing competitions hosted by Fiddlehead Farm & Forest, and any other events which require setting outside the normal setting schedule.
- Work with the routesetting team to create any routes or boulders needed for specific user groups including but not limited to youth climbing teams, camps, adaptive climber groups, and climbing affinity groups.
Setting Administration & Facilities Maintenance
- Assist the Head Routesetter in the administration of the setting program, including but not limited to:
- Tagging and grading all routes and boulders, contributing input and feedback about grade, style, and quality as needed.
- Maintaining and inspecting all tools and routesetting gear, and notifying the Head Routesetter in a timely manner when tools and/or gear are becoming worn or need replacement.
- Taking inventory of setting tools, equipment, climbing holds, volumes.
- Organizing the setter’s closet and storing all holds and volumes safely and appropriately.
- Repairing volumes and climbing wall surfaces, replacing t-nuts and volume inserts, and any other routesetting maintenance tasks.
Team & Community Participation
- Showing up with kindness, curiosity, and a welcoming demeanor in all interactions with guests, fellow staff, and community partners.
- Engage with gym members, other Fiddlehead staff, and community partners to gain insight and collect feedback into their experience with gym routes and boulders.
- Contribute to creation of the setting schedule, giving adequate advance notice for time off so that guest setters may be scheduled.
- Participate in regular all staff training and meetings, both within the setting department and the gym as a whole.
- Complete cross training in front desk duties to provide support as needed.
Professional Growth & Development
- Develop and implement an individual growth plan to guide continued professional growth as a routesetter, in consultation with the Head Routesetter.
- Participate in team training and exploration days to contribute to the growth of the routesetting team.
- Advocate for participation in clinics and trainings that contribute to professional growth.
Qualifications:
- One year of commercial routesetting experience is preferred.
- Capability to work safely at height, utilizing rope safety systems and ladders.
- Proficiency with routesetting tools.
- Standing and walking for extended periods and lifting and moving up to 50lbs.
- Commitment to setting accessible and equitable routes and boulder problems.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to building and maintaining a positive feedback culture.
Additional Considerations:
- This is a part-time position, but full-time work is available, combining this position with work in other parts of the gym, including front desk, coaching, instruction, programs, bike park staff, Fern Cafe barista, etc.
