The Position

We are looking for an experienced, creative, and team-oriented Route Setter to join our routesetting department. Working under the direction of our Head Route Setter, you will help create high-quality, engaging, and safe climbing routes and boulder problems for G1’s diverse membership.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, enjoys collaborating with other setters, is receptive to constructive feedback, and understands that great routesetting means creating a positive climbing experience for everyone—from first-time climbers to experienced athletes.

Responsibilities

• Set creative, high-quality routes and boulder problems across a variety of grades, styles, and terrain, as directed by the Head Route Setter.
• Participate in forerunning, grading, and refining routes to ensure appropriate difficulty, quality, and accessibility.
• Give and receive constructive feedback and collaborate with other setters to continually improve the finished product.
• Strip, wash, sort, and organize climbing holds and volumes.
• Safely set from ladders, ropes, lifts, and other equipment as required.
• Follow all routesetting safety procedures, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment and fall protection.
• Inspect and report damaged holds, hardware, and routesetting equipment.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and assist with climbing wall and facility maintenance as needed.
• Interact positively and professionally with members and guests, serving as an approachable ambassador for G1’s routesetting program.
• Assist with routesetting for competitions and special events, including occasional evenings and weekends.
• Complete additional projects and responsibilities as directed by the Head Route Setter.

Qualifications

Required:

• At least one year of commercial routesetting experience.
• Experience setting in both bouldering and roped climbing environments.
• Ability to set and forerun approximately V5 and 5.12 difficulty.
• Ability to set for a wide range of climbing abilities, ages, heights, and experience levels.
• Strong understanding of climbing movement, grading, and routesetting safety.
• Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to give and receive constructive feedback.
• Reliable, self-motivated, and committed to producing high-quality work.

Preferred:

• Experience setting for youth and competitive climbing programs.
• USA Climbing routesetting certification or competition setting experience.
• Experience working with climbing wall maintenance, holds, and volumes.

Compensation & Benefits

$24.50 per hour
