Remember when you first got REALLY psyched?

I do. The setters at my gym (Isamer Bilog, Ryan Chung) debuted a problem centered around a fat new hold they just got. It was a ridiculous hold — a clown nose red, deep, positive, dualtex hueco, huge by the standards of the day. And it inspired a ridiculous problem — just the hueco, about 10 feet up the concrete vert. Run and jump off a smear, catch the hueco, wrestle/mantle to stand in it, reach the lip to top out. Every climber lined up that night. Almost everyone could catch the hueco, but no one could flash. The hueco was positive enough to grab easily and try to manipulate, but the slippery dualtex and rascally setting made conquering it a battle. Beginners and advanced climbers were working on one problem, learning, teaching, fist bumping, laughing A LOT, getting each other’s names, making plans…
