POSITION: Rock Climbing Specialist, Summer Camp

LOCATION: Willsboro, NY – Pok-O-MacCready is a 122-year-old coed camp for children aged 6-16. Our campus consists of 400 acres of pristine wilderness on the shores of Long Pond in the Adirondack Park. Campers have the opportunity to participate in a 2, 3, 4, or 7 week session. Summer camp programs emphasize wilderness skills, horseback riding, traditionaland non-traditional sports, creative arts, and community. LEVEL OF POSITION: Full Time; Seasonal (June 18th – August 18th, 2026)
JOB OBJECTIVE: Ensure that participants are having a safe and positive climbing experience. Maintain andimprove climbing equipment and the facility. Set new routes. Teach classes to campers of varying ages and ability levels. With the support of our Wilderness Director, plan and execute day trips to local crags such as King Phillip’s Slab, the Beer Walls, Pok-O-Moonshine, and Pitch-off. The Specialist will be responsible for the cleaning, upkeep and general maintenance of the rock climbing gym. Classes will take place in the Crux, Pok-O’s custom built gym with 40’ and 23’ walls and small bouldering cave.
QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to work legally in the United States. Candidates must be personable, energetic, team players, hard workers, and have a strong desire to share their love of the outdoors. Experience teaching youth in a climbing gym is encouraged. Solid judgment and decision-making skills, as well as comfort with outdoor living are required. Current WFA and CPR certification is desired but First Aid / CPR training can be provided on-site for qualified applicants.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: The Rock Climbing Specialist must have a demonstrated ability to competently and independently conduct a climbing class with a group of 6-13 participants. They must possess the ability to monitor safety, participant well being, and group dynamics, as well as be a creative and independent thinker, able to make safe decisions in the field.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
55% – Teach various classes
10% – Manage Section Activities
15% – Gear Maintenance and Area Management
20% – Assist with various aspects of the running of a children’s camp, including supervision during meals, evening activities, camp games, etc.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS: $3,100 for the summer camp season (June 18-August 18, 9 days of staff training included), plus room, board, and laundry. Bonus for additional certifications. A dynamic and fun environment in which to work, play, and socialize. WMA Wilderness First Aid and CPR.
