Do you want to build Norway’s best climbing environment?

Bergen Klatreklubb is hiring a Head Coach  |  Full-time (100%)  |  Bergen, Norway  |  International applications welcome

Bergen Climbing Club has a clear ambition: to make Bergen the centre of climbing in Norway. It’s a big goal – and we’re already well on our way.

We are Norway’s largest climbing club, with almost 300 active young climbers and 700 children on our waiting list. We are a pilot club for elite development with the Norwegian Climbing Federation, we have national team athletes training here regularly, and next year we expand into one of the world’s largest indoor climbing facilities. With nearly 4000 members in our club we have lots of resources to play with. We have an internationally experienced routesetting team holding world-class standards. What we’re building now is the coaching side to match.

We’re looking for someone who gets fired up by the idea of creating a training environment that athletes will remember for the rest of their climbing careers.

What you’ll build

This isn’t a position for someone who wants everything figured out from day one. You join a growing club and take responsibility for establishing the sporting foundation:

  • Athletic plan. Develop and implement a long-term athletic programme across all levels – from recreational to elite.
  • Training structure. Build training groups, session content, and progression pathways that work across levels and age groups.
  • Coaching environment. Recruit, mentor, and develop the club’s other coaches – you are the professional anchor they look to.
  • Elite collaboration. Work closely with the sports director, routesetting team, and the Norwegian Climbing Federation to strengthen elite development.
  • School partnerships. Coordinate collaboration with our elite high school programmes and ensure the club is the natural environment for Norwegian climbing talent.
  • Competition and development. Plan and follow up athlete participation in regional, national, and international competitions.

Who we’re looking for

  • Experience in coaching competitive climbing and solid knowledge of training methodology and athlete development
  • You’re good at building structures and systems – not just running sessions
  • A clear professional voice that other coaches and athletes can orient themselves around
  • Comfortable working independently and in a team while putting your own stamp on an entire training organisation
  • Strong communication skills – English or Norwegian
  • Relevant coaching certification preferred (IFSC, national federation equivalent, or similar)

What we offer

  • Full-time position (100%) with salary in line with Norwegian standards for full-time coaching roles
  • A unique starting point: a world-class facility, a strong routesetting team, and full backing from a growing federation project
  • Support for professional development, courses, and certifications
  • Flexible working hours and a varied role. Approximately 20% of the position will involve tasks outside of coaching (such as routesetting, front desk duties, or other administrative work).
  • Full Norwegian welfare benefits: healthcare, pension, and five weeks of vacation
  • Bergen – seven mountains, the sea, and some of Norway’s best outdoor climbing on your doorstep

Maybe this is you?

You find it just as rewarding to see a beginner send their first route as to coach an elite athlete through a competition. You know that great training environments don’t build themselves – they are planned, shaped, and looked after. And you want to be the person who does that.

We’re open to different backgrounds and levels of experience. What matters most is the right drive, a clear coaching philosophy, and the desire to build something that lasts.

How to apply

Send a short cover letter – tell us about your coaching philosophy and why this role interests you – along with your CV to post@bergenklatreklubb.no. We review applications on a rolling basis.
