In the words of our founder, Eric Hörst, “In November 2012, I met a strong, young and unknown (in the USA) German climber named Alex Megos. My family and I climbed next to Alex at the Red River Gorge’s Dark Side crag. Alex was fresh out of high school, a 19-year-old aspiring pro climber…and he commenced to quickly and quietly second-go the rarely climbed “Death Star” (5.14b). It was an impressive feat to watch.

In the years that followed, I kept in touch with Alex and I developed a friendship with his Cafe Kraft coaches, Dicki Korb and Patrick Matros. We climbed a bit together over the years (Frankenjura, Ceuse, and Red River Gorge), and I enjoyed seeing Alex grow into one of the world’s very best climbers!

In March 2013, Alex achieved the world’s first 5.14d onsight (“Estado Critico” in Siurana, Spain) and then in December 2015 he climbed his first 5.15b, “First Round First Minute”. Alex took it up a notch with his first ascent of “Perfecto Mundo” (5.15c) in May 2018; then in August 2020, he completed his long-term Céüse project “Bibliographie” (5.15c). [All the while Alex was competing on the World Cup circuit, and he secured a spot in Tokyo’s 2020 Summer Olympics!

Alex’s climbing journey is beautifully documented in two films: Rotpunkt – Alex Megos and the Advent, the Agony and the Art of the Redpoint (2019) and Rotpunkt: Bibliographie (2020).

In autumn 2022, I spent a few weeks with Alex at the Red River Gorge. In addition to witnessing some awesome displays of climbing prowess, I was grateful to learn more about Alex’s personal brand of high-performance vegan nutrition (which we’ll share more with you about in the coming months!).

I’ve worked with dozens of elite climbers over the years, many of whom take their nutrition seriously. But in living with Alex for a few weeks last fall I discovered a new level of attention to detail — Alex is one of those rare professional athletes that strives to do everything (reasonably and ethically) possible to become a master of his craft. From morning yoga, to precisely executed warm-up routine, to well-timed send-goes, to hour-long whole food meal prep, and even his rest-day runs, Alex is calculated and disciplined to a level that I’ve not witnessed in other athletes.

As owner of a performance nutrition brand, I naturally was eager to share with Alex the science and ingredient sourcing behind my PhysiVāntage Nutrition products. Alex was excited to learn that seven or our nine products are plant-based, and that all of our products are made with premium-grade (and tested) ingredients. Alex quickly discovered a strong liking of our chocolate Powerplex Protein, which he uses to help him reach a 100+ gram daily protein target. Alex often mixes his Powerplex into dairy-free Greek yogurt for a delicious protein-rich vegan dessert!”

We are excited to be working with Alex and supporting his ongoing climbing journey, with PhysiVāntage Nutrition. One of things Alex was super excited to learn, about our products, is that seven out of nine of our products are plant-based. Of course, all of our products are made with premium-grade (and tested) ingredients.
