Job Description: The Bend Endurance Academy is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Central Oregon with a mission of cultivating remarkable youth through the human-powered sports of climbing, biking, and Nordic skiing. We focus on developing each participant to the best of their ability, making them stronger both physically and emotionally through our coaching methods, fostering peer-to-peer interaction, and community involvement.

Bend Endurance Academy Climbing Programs strive to be at the forefront of climbing-focused youth programming. Our programs are designed to inspire and fuel the next generation of climbers and are focused on creating well-rounded climbers who care for the climbing community and the sport. By creating meaningful relationships with our athletes and their families, our climbing coaches are crucial to the Academy’s success. 

As a Coach for Bend Endurance Academy, you would be responsible for coaching duties. Depending on experience and availability, you would coach 1-5 days a week. Coaching with BEA requires a strong knowledge of climbing technique, the ability to communicate well with a wide variety of youth climbers, and a high level of cooperative leadership. This position would mainly work with BEA’s Climbing Clubs and Development Teams, and may be expected to work nights and/or weekends to accommodate practice schedules and events.

Routesetting with BEA requires a high level of both commercial and competition setting ability. With a wide range of sizes and abilities using the space at The Academy, you should be able to set for the full range of youth categories. Routesetters strip, set, and forerun boulders, maintain the walls, hold room, and facility, and create a movement-oriented learning environment for BEA participants.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coach youth climbers ranging from 5 -18 years of age during multiple practices a week
  • Maintain group and participant safety during practice sessions
  • Plan and implement age appropriate climbing/training sessions for a variety of ages and abilities following the Climbing Director’s guidance
  • Work with Climbing Director and other coaches to maintain a healthy and welcoming environment
  • Maintain a positive energy and ensure that participants are engaged, motivated and improving on a physical-technical-mental-tactical-social level
  • Keep the Climbing Director informed about participants’ progress and any ongoing issues or challenges
  • Strip, set, and forerun boulders 1-2 times per week
  • Maintain walls and routesetting equipment
  • Work with Climbing Director and other setters to create a collaborative, cohesive setting team
  • Set for clinics, mock rounds, and competitions as needed

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Must pass a background check, be able to drive our vehicles and complete all other required training (First Aid/CPR, Concussion, SafeSport, etc.)
  • Must be excellent working with youth climbers
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of rock climbing
  • Previous experience coaching youth climbing 
  • USAC Coach/Routesetter credentials
  • Ability to forerun V8+ is beneficial

Pay Rate: Starting at $20 – 25 / hour, DOE
