BoulderHouse Langford
Victoria, BC, Canada
Specs: Recently opened 13,500-square-foot gym is promoted as West Shore’s first bouldering-focused facility and the largest privately-owned climbing facility on Vancouver Island. The interior features two bouldering walls—a main wall and a wall (on an upper floor) known as the TreeHouse for children. Additional amenities include hangboards and a training room with weightlifting equipment. The intended climbing experience for patrons in the gym entails working through eight color-coded climbing circuits that progress in difficulty. Additionally, the gym is set to begin its “youth discovering program,” as well as some pre-competitive youth programming.
The BoulderHouse Langford gym was created through a partnership between a local climber, Robert Somogyi, and Jean-Marc de la Plante, owner of the UPLIFY Climbing gym development company. Other Canadian gyms founded by de la Plante/UPLIFY include Allez-Up (Montreal), Joe Rockhead’s (Toronto), Up the Bloc (Mississauga), two Seven Bays Bouldering facilities (both in Halifax), and BoulderHouse Climbing (Victoria). “The goal for each gym is always the same,” noted a press release. “Be a hub for the local climbing community.”

In Their Words: “Climbing has given my kids confidence, literacy in movement, and body awareness. We’ve opened many facilities across Canada, but this one is unique with its dedicated kids’ wall. I want to give them the same bouldering experience as the adults, but scaled to their size.”
—Jean-Marc de la Plante, co-founder
