Job Title: Head Routesetter
Job Summary
We are seeking a talented and safety-focused Head Routesetter to lead routesetting operations across our 17,500 sq. ft. climbing facility. The Gravity Vault Princeton opened in December 2024, and has an active and engaged climbing community.
The Head Route Setter Position will oversee an existing team of 2 routesetters along with a rotation of guest setters. Responsible for all location route setting, wall and equipment maintenance, and work with gym management on setting schedules, safety, and procedures. This is a part time position that reports to the General Manager.
Head Route Setter Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee location’s route setting program.
- In coordination with the General Manager, develop and adhere to route setting budget schedules on a rotating basis, enabling new routes and problems to be delivered consistently.
- Conform to facility work at height standards and maintain oversight of safe job site practices.
- Ensure the highest level of route setting creativity and quality control throughout the facility through forerunning and route adjustments.
- Assign grades to climbs with a focus on consistency and accuracy.
- Help location management train employees to assist with maintenance, PPE inspections, and mentor apprentice setters.
- Maintain regular communications with the contracted setters.
- Maintain setting log and reconcile setting invoices.
- Maintain and inspect facility fixtures and equipment.
- Perform and oversee auto belay inspections, maintenance and rotation.
- Maintain and update Training board systems as needed.
- Coordinate route setting support for location events with the General Manager.
- Maintain route setting supply inventory.
Requirements
- Extensive indoor and outdoor climbing experience including bouldering and sport climbing
- Ability to stand, climb, and work for extended periods on uneven surfaces including in front and behind climbing wall structures
- Ability to lift, carry, and haul loads of up to 50 pounds for short periods of time over uneven surfaces
- Ability to sit and suspend from a wall in a harness for extended periods of time at heights up to 40 feet, including proper use of work at height PPE according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Ability to safely move, place, operate and stand on ladders according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Ability to use hand and power tools with applicable PPE according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Ability to follow and perform emergency rescue procedures
- Ability to forerun boulder problems graded at least V8 and roped routes 5.13+.
- CPR/AED, and Basic First Aid Certification
Preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of sport and bouldering setting experience
- Climbing Wall Association Work At Height Certification or similar training
- USA Climbing Route Setting Membership and Level 1 Certification
