The chief governing body for competition climbing in the United States, USA Climbing, recently announced Kelly Feilke as its new Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Development. The role will entail close work with the organization’s Board of Directors, and Feilke will report directly to USA Climbing’s CEO, Marc Norman.
In a press release about the hire, the push for climbing’s inclusion in future Olympics—beyond Tokyo 2020—was specifically cited. Feilke was quoted as saying, “Climbing is a lifestyle and the Olympic Games will shine a light on the positive benefits of this beautiful sport. I look forward to being a part of climbing’s continued growth as we work toward Tokyo [in 2020], Paris [in 2024], and beyond.”
Feilke, climbing in gyms and outdoors since college, comes to the role with extensive experience related to sports marketing—specifically in the Olympic context. Previous companies he has worked with through agencies include Coca-Cola and Samsung. He has also worked closely with Toyota, Adidas, Visa, and Volkswagen, according to the press release. Prior to joining USA Climbing, Feilke led the marketing at USA Cycling and USA Gymnastics.
Marc Norman said of the hire, “Kelly has a proven track record of connecting with constituencies, growing revenue and will affect all aspects of our organization. He will ensure we continue to respect and stay true to the larger climbing community while serving the needs of all USA Climbing members from grassroots clubs and local gyms to elite athletes.”
