Hoosier Heights  is seeking a passionate and safety-conscious Instructor of Rock Climbing to lead our Intro to Indoor Climbing and Intermediate Indoor Climbing courses. This full-time role is based at Hoosier Heights Bloomington and involves teaching IU students the technical skills, safety protocols, and physical techniques required to earn college credit. This position is also in charge of all climbing classes offered ranging from lead climbing to climbing technique (unaffiliated with Indiana University). This is an ideal position for an experienced climber with a talent for teaching and a high level of organizational discipline.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Technical Instruction & Safety (60%)

  • Teach the Fundamentals of Rock Climbing, including proper harness fit, knot tying, top rope and lead belaying, top rope and lead climbing, as well as bouldering safety.
  • Educate students on climbing movement, footwork, and core techniques.
  • Conduct “belay checks” and safety assessments to ensure all students are competent in life-safety skills.
  • Maintain a high-energy, inclusive, and encouraging classroom environment.

2. Academic & Course Coordination (30%)

  • Manage the course syllabus and ensure all IU academic requirements for college credit are met.
  • Track student attendance and input grades via the Canvas learning management system.
  • Act as the primary onsite point of contact for IU students, handling registration questions and equipment needs.
  • Coordinate scheduling and facility use with Hoosier Heights management.
  • Master and develop efficient and effective protocols for using university systems (Canvas)

3. Community Climbing Course Management (10%)

  • Organize all climbing courses offered to the general climbing community. 
  • Manage small staff of climbing instructors
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on climbing techniques and skills

 

Qualifications

  • Education: * Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of active rock climbing experience. Previous experience in coaching, camp counseling, or outdoor leadership is highly valued.
  • Certifications: Must hold (or be willing to obtain) First Aid/CPR certification. CWA or AMGA instructor certifications are desired but not required. 

Physical Requirements

  • Climbing Ability: Must be able to demonstrate climbing techniques comfortably on various wall angles.
  • Stamina: Ability to remain on your feet for 6–8 hours a day in a gym environment.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (mats, rope bags, or equipment).
  • Manual Dexterity: High level of proficiency in knot tying and the operation of various belay devices (ATC, Grigri, etc.).
