We are looking for a customer-focused and experienced Routesetter to join our team at Ruckus Climbing Gym in Greensboro, NC. The Head Routesetter is instrumental in setting the tone and shaping the experience of everyone who walks through our doors. Although setting itself is a large component of this role, this is a leadership-oriented position. GENERAL:
- Work with the Gym Manager on hiring, retaining and growing a best in class route setting team
- Establish, maintain, and continually improve policies and procedures for all stages of the setting process
- Comfortable giving constructive feedback and mentoring a team
- Enthusiastic about an “All hands on deck” approach – working the front desk, helping newcomers, engaging with the community are all expected during downtime
- Ability to deal with difficult circumstances with a positive attitude
- Proactively generate new ideas about how the Ruckus routesetting team can differentiate itself
- Create a top down culture for following best practices for work area safety
- Identify and coordinate development and training opportunities for route setting team
- Take initiative during downtime to organize and keep busy, staying focused on ensuring the best possible experience for our community
- Research and stay current with trends and innovations in route setting and route setting products
- Work hand in hand with the Gym Manager on safety, ordering and budgeting, training strategies, and route setter evaluations and performance issues
ROUTESETTING AND MAINTENANCE:
- Staging holds, materials, and tools prior to each day of setting
- Set and/strip boulders and routes multiple days a week
- Perform regular safety inspections of ropes, auto belays, all wall hardware, flooring, quickdraws, walls and setting equipment
- Proactively search for, identify, and resolve (if able) safety issues in the climbing and training areas
- Update and maintain route tags and signage
- Monitor the total number of problems and routes in the gym and set new climbs to maintain the correct distribution of grades
- Ensure all holds and volumes are washed and organized each week
- Comfortable experimenting with different setting styles, innovating and co-creating with other route setters, while being mindful of the needs of children and adaptive climbers
- Ensure all routes and problems are set in a functionally creative manner
- Keep the hold room and other workspaces clean and organized
- Set for competitions and events
QUALIFICATIONS:
- USAC Level 1 setting certification or higher
- Ability to forerun V7 and 5.13
- Proven management and leadership experience
- Additional Work at Heights certifications are a plus
- Passion for the craft of route setting
- A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and outgoing personality
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to adapt to a constantly evolving workload, aptitude for identifying priorities in a regularly changing environment, and readiness to respond to unexpected tasks
- Ability to work mornings, evenings, and weekends
- A minimum of two years of commercial routesetting experience
- Knowledgeable in rope systems (i.e. appropriate gear to use, knots, and leashing) and comfortable setting from a rope
- Competition experience is preferred, both adult and youth
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Keep up with the physical demands of the routesetting schedule/rotation
- Ability to lift 50lbs regularly
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Salary commensurate on candidate’s experience (expected range between $42,000-$50,000) for 40+ hour workweek
