Senior Accountant  (Indoor Recreation Business)

Role Description

The Senior Accountant leads Alaska Rock Gym’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of the organization’s financial reporting. This role is responsible for maintaining GAAP-compliant accounting practices, managing the general ledger, overseeing payroll and core accounting functions, and supporting leadership with financial analysis and reporting. 

The Senior Accountant reports to the General Manager and collaborates closely with all department directors. This role partners with leadership to evaluate financial performance, monitor key performance indicators, and support strategic planning that enables sustainable business growth.

This role is responsible for developing and maintaining internal financial controls, including approval processes, reconciliation procedures, and financial documentation standards to protect company assets and ensure transparency. Additionally, develop financial dashboards and reporting that provide operational insights, including membership revenue, program performance, and facility utilization.

In a mid-size organization like Alaska Rock Gym, the Senior Accountant plays a hands-on role in accounting operations while also providing financial leadership and oversight. This role supports administrative HR compliance tasks in partnership with company leadership but is not responsible for full HR program management.

 

Job Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Manage bank deposits, monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes to produce accurate financial statements.
  • Maintain oversight of the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of financial transactions.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes.
  • Managing Simple IRA contributions
  • Review and approve daily journal entries, bank reconciliations, monthly credit card reconciliation and financial reports.
  • Ensure the integrity of financial records and accounting procedures.
  • Monitor company cash flow and maintain visibility into the organization’s financial position.
  • Submit 940, 941, and Alaska ESC reports and payments.
  • Process collections and vendor payments and checks

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure PCI compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
  • Maintain GAAP-compliant accounting policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate the preparation of tax filings in collaboration with external accounting partners.
  • Develop, document, and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risk.
  • Maintain historical records in accordance with state/federal law.

Audit Management

  • Coordinate and lead annual financial and retirement plan audits with external auditors.
  • Prepare required documentation and ensure audit readiness throughout the year.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis

  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with leadership.
  • Monitor and assist with financial performance against budget projections.
  • Provide leadership with financial insights to support operational and strategic decision-making.

Accounting Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and optimize accounting systems including QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Support operational systems used for business management such as Fiserv, RedPoint HQ and Connecteam.
  • Identify opportunities for improved financial processes, reporting efficiency, and automation.

Human Resources Compliance Support

  • Assist with HR administrative compliance including employee onboarding documentation and background checks.
  • Support administration of employee benefits and payroll-related changes.
  • Coordinate workers’ compensation reporting and communication with insurance providers.
  • Assist with compliance requirements involving the Alaska Department of Labor and other regulatory agencies.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • 2–3 years of professional accounting experience preferred
  • Experience in financial reporting, general ledger management, and accounting operations
  • Experience in a senior accountant, accounting manager, or supervisory role preferred
  • Experience working in small or mid-size organizations preferred

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles
  • Experience managing financial reporting and month-end close
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop
  • Experience with ERP or accounting systems
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with RedPoint HQ, Fiserv, or Connecteam is preferred but not required.

The pay range for this role is 55k-70k annually, depending on experience.
