Boulder Union Is Now Hiring (Front Desk Manager, Flex Position 30 – 40 HR/WK)
Boulder Union Climbing and Fitness is a killer new bouldering-specific climbing gym located in the heart of Downtown New Bedford, Massachusetts. We are looking for a Front Desk Manager to run the front of the gym and keep things moving day to day. This role is hands-on and centered around people. You’ll work regular shifts behind the front desk, support the front desk team, and help members and first time climbers feel comfortable in the space. You’ll also play an active role in building our community and growing our membership base.
This is a leadership role that is closely involved in daily operations. You’ll be behind the desk, supporting staff during busy times, and working closely with ownership to improve systems, workflows, and how the front of the gym operates.
What You’ll Do
- Work regular shifts behind the front desk, checking people in, answering questions, and supporting members and guests
- Lead and support front desk staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and day to day guidance
- Manage the front desk schedule, ensuring proper coverage, smooth shift transitions, and clear communication with staff
- Handle memberships, sales, renewals, cancellations, and EFTs accurately and clearly
- Help grow our membership by building real relationships with members, welcoming new climbers, and making Boulder Union feel like a place people want to return to
- Work closely with ownership to develop and improve systems, workflows, and procedures that improve employee usability and customer satisfaction
- Keep front desk systems, policies, and routines consistent and easy for staff to follow
- Keep the front desk, lobby, and public areas clean, organized, and running smoothly
- Take care of admin tasks like waivers, check ins, scheduling tools, basic reporting, and work within a budget.
- Help resolve member or staff issues in a calm, straightforward way
- Support gym events, programs, and busy days as needed
- Manage retail inventory, restocking, and displays
- Make sure staff know safety expectations and what to do in emergency situations
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Climbing industry or equivalent personal climbing experience preferred.
- Two years of management experience in a service-focused industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, fitness, or food service).
- Comfortable working behind the desk while leading a small team
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, some holidays, with occasional odd hours for special events.
- Highly organized, efficient, and professional.
- Strong interpersonal skills for exceptional customer service and effective staff management.
- A self starter who can take initiative, spot problems, and follow things through without needing constant direction.
- Able to lift up to 25 lbs and stay on your feet during shifts.
