General Manager: MetroRock Essex

 

Position Overview

MetroRock is looking for a General Manager to lead ongoing operations at our gym in Essex, VT. This role is ideal for a dynamic leader who thrives in building teams, establishing systems, and creating an outstanding member and guest experience.

As the General Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the gym, guide the hiring and training of staff, and ensure the facility reflects MetroRock’s values and commitment to excellence. This role is pivotal in shaping the culture and success of this gym.

 

Key Responsibilities

Operational & Facility Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including risk management, cleanliness, and customer service.
  • Ensure consistent execution of systems such as opening/closing, check-in, point-of-sale, and retail.
  • Coordinate with the Facilities Manager to stay on top of inspections, maintenance, and repair needs.
  • Maintain a culture of safety, consistency, and professionalism.
  • Manage Staff Schedule and Payroll

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Hire and onboard new staff
  • Supervise and support the front desk and operational staff, setting clear expectations and providing regular feedback.
  • Facilitate team meetings and 1:1 check-ins to align around goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with Routesetting, Youth Programming, Coaching, and Marketing teams to ensure smooth operations and strong communication.
  • Build and maintain a positive, motivated, and accountable team.

Customer & Community Experience

  • Deliver a welcoming, professional, and inclusive environment for all members and guests.
  • Address customer service issues directly and empower staff to resolve concerns.
  • Plan and support gym-wide programming, events, and community-building initiatives to engage members.

Communication & Strategic Alignment

  • Serve as the key point of contact for leadership and cross-department communication.
  • Implement company initiatives and maintain alignment with MetroRock’s mission and values.
  • Represent MetroRock in the local climbing and outdoor community through events, outreach, and partnerships.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • 2+ years of leadership or management experience, ideally in a climbing gym, fitness facility, or similar environment.
  • Proven success in hiring, training, and managing staff.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; able to set expectations, follow through, and hold teams accountable.
  • Familiarity with climbing gym operations, including risk management, safety standards, and member experience.
  • Comfortable using Rock Gym Pro, Google Workspace, and other administrative tools.
  • A self-starter who thrives in building systems and leading a team in a new environment.
  • Genuine passion for climbing and creating a strong, inclusive community.

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Full-time, exempt position.
  • Must be available evenings and weekends as needed to support the team and operations.
  • Primarily based at the Essex, VT location, with occasional travel for company-wide initiatives or professional development.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary $55,000 – $75,000, depending on experience.
  • Benefits include health insurance stipend, paid time off, industry discounts, and professional development support.
