U.S. Olympic Climbers to Train at Portland Rock Gym on Replica of Paris 2024 Olympic Bouldering Wall

Portland, OR – July 8, 2024EP Climbing is proud to announce that members of the U.S. Olympic climbing team have trained at Portland Rock Gym (PRG) Beaverton this past weekend. The athletes trained on the Titan Boulder, an exact replica of the Olympic Bouldering Wall for Paris 2024. This world-class indoor climbing facility was built by EP Climbing, and the Titan Boulder was created in partnership with the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). Its breakthrough design offers a maximum range for route setting, optimal viewing angles, and caters to both international competitors and amateur climbers.

The Titan Boulder has been the stage for numerous prestigious events, including the IFSC World Championships in Bern 2023, the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Pan American Games Santiago 2023, Asian Olympic Qualifier in Saudi Arabia, and the Asian Youth Championships 2023 in India. There are only 22 Titan Walls globally, and PRG houses to the only one in the United States.

EP Climbing has a long-standing relationship with Portland Rock Gym, which established itself as a pioneer in modular climbing gyms in 1988, becoming the second in the U.S. PRG is now the oldest indoor climbing gym in the country. Fast forward to 2023, PRG unveiled phase one of a colossal 64,000-square-foot facility at Cedar Mill’s Peterkort Towne Square, poised to be the nation’s largest climbing gym, featuring the first Titan Boulder in the U.S.

“We are thrilled to support climbers by providing them with the best possible training environment,” said JoAnne Carelli, Sales Director of EP Climbing. “The Titan Boulder at PRG will help athletes prepare for the challenges they will face in numerous climbing competitions.”

The climbing community eagerly anticipates the Paris 2024 Olympics, taking place from August 4-11, 2024. We look forward to cheering on Team USA and all other climbing athletes as they compete on sport’s biggest stage.

The “PhysiVāntage 3” Competing in the 2024 Olympics!

PhysiVantage Pros Natalia Grossman, Alex Megos, and Yannick Flohé are heading to the Paris Games

image of 3 physivantage athletes The 2024 Olympics Qualifying process has come to an exciting conclusion, and PhysiVāntage Nutrition is proud to announce that three of our pro team members will be competing in Paris! PhysiVāntage climbers Alex Megos and Yannick Flohé (both of Team Germany), accumulated enough points to become Olympic-qualified by the end of the semi-final round in Budapest. The Budapest competition results were combined with the results from May’s Shanghai Qualifier to determine the final spots for the Paris Games. Rounding out the PhysiVāntage presence in Paris is Natalia Grossman (Team USA). She did not need to compete in the recent qualifying events, since her win at November’s Pan Am Games got her an early ticket to Paris. Only 20 men and 20 women will compete in Paris – this time the format being a combined Sport Climbing and Bouldering medal event. Another 14 men and 14 women are qualified for the stand-alone Speed Climbing medal event. Other Americans who earned a ticket to the Paris Games include Brooke Raboutou, Jesse Grupper, and Colin Duffy. Completing the American team are speed climbers Emma Hunt and Samuel Watson. The Olympic Games officially run from July 26 – August 11, however, the climbing action takes place between August 5 – 10th. Other big names competing in the men’s division include Adam Ondra (CZE), Jakob Schubert (AUT), Sasha Lehmann (SUI), Sorato Anraku (JPN), Tomoa Narasaki (JPN), and defending Gold Medalist Alberto Ginés López (ESP). Top women who will be challenging Brooke and Natalia, include Jessica Pilz (AUT), Ai Mori (JPN), Oriane Bertone (FRA), Miho Nonaka (JPN), Seo Chae-hyun (KOR), and defending Gold Medalist Janja Garnbret (SLO). (View full list of qualified climbers >> ) It promises to be six days of epic competition climbing — mark your calendars to watch the “PhysiVāntage 3”! These three Olympic-bound athletes use PhysiVāntage Nutrition to support their training and climbing performance. Some of their favorite products include Sendure-X, Supercharged Collagen, Powerplex (plant-based protein), FLOW, and Weapons Grade Whey (protein). Chance Meeting Gives Way to New Oregon Gym

Bouldering walls at Beyond the Wall Climbing gym
Two Hillsboro, Oregon, couples—Marjorie and James Kirby and Mikinna and Stephen Johnson—teamed up to open a new bouldering gym in the area, following a chance meeting two years ago at the 2022 CWA Summit. (All images courtesy of Beyond the Wall Climbing)

Beyond the Wall Climbing Hillsboro, Oregon

Specs: Beyond the Wall Climbing (BTW) opened west of Portland—in the city of Hillsboro, Oregon—on June 16th this year. Owned by longtime Hillsboro residents Marjorie and James Kirby and Mikinna and Stephen Johnson, the team has “dreamed for years” of putting up a climbing gym right in town. The Kirby’s have been Hillsboro residents for over two decades and are currently raising their four school-aged children in the city. “The couple has persevered through tough market conditions for years to bring this project to market both for their family and other families in the area,” a media package stated. Opening a gym in the area has also been a multi-year goal of the Johnsons, who were born and raised in Hillsboro. “As their passion for climbing solidified more than five years ago, the couple decided that they wanted to pursue opening a climbing gym in the area,” per the announcement.

Eldorado Climbing

The Johnsons first started discussing plans for a gym back in 2018. Then in 2022, they attended the CWA Summit in Salt Lake City. Separately, James and Marjorie Kirby had also attended the Summit that year. James spotted the Johnson’s Oregon license plate and offered to take them to lunch. As they got to talking, the two couples found they shared a similar objective. “Because our visions were aligned, we stayed in contact and earned each other’s trust,” said Stephen. The Kirbys and Johnsons kept the bouldering-focused gym “simple,” Stephen described, with most of the space dedicated to climbing terrain. In the 10,000-square-foot facility, BTW features over 5,200 square feet of climbing surface. The gym also has an event space, learning center and fitness area, in addition to a Kilter Board and Tension Board 2. The fitness area has equipment for training, warming up and rehabbing injuries, but because BTW is located next door to Planet Fitness, the owners decided to not go overboard with the fitness amenities. “We didn’t want to spend too much real estate on something one of our members could get next door,” Stephen said.
Training walls at BTW
When Stephen began climbing, he didn’t find a big difference between sport climbing and bouldering: “To me, the feeling of freedom is the same. Bouldering is the lowest cost option to introduce that type of movement to our city,” he said, explaining some of the thinking that went into opening a gym with only bouldering and training walls.
According to BTW’s website, finding the right space for the gym was a significant hurdle. “We’ve vetted dozens of buildings over the course of many years that just couldn’t fit our [oversized] gym dreams,” the website detailed. “By chance, we discovered an empty retail storefront near Shute Park that looked like it had promise.” The team measured ceilings, ran the numbers, and eventually leased Suite B2, the home of BTW. “Since then, we have been hard at work, opening up the space and exposing the ceilings to get the height needed for our bouldering walls,” the website continued. Construction started in early 2024, wrapping up in time for the June opening. In Their Words: “I began climbing in 2016. Before I discovered climbing, most of my time at work and at home was spent sitting down. I’m a banker by trade, and I love board games and cooking. I would take stock of my week and realize that I had been sitting the whole time. I was stationary, and my body started to adapt to the lack of movement. Everyone knows you should move, but when the only option you can think of is an elliptical and workout machines, it’s hard to motivate yourself to get up. When I was introduced to climbing, something clicked. I remembered the feeling I had when I was a kid climbing trees, and I loved feeling like that kid again. Movement used to be a chore that required discipline. Now it’s a hobby that is fueled by passion. Physically, mentally and spiritually, I’m a better person when I’m moving.” – Stephen Johnson, Co-Founder and Co-Owner of Beyond the Wall Climbing

JOB SEEKER TIPS:

All about work-life integration and how it differs from balance By CareerBuilder “Let’s start by defining the idea of integrating the things you have to do for work with the things you have to do at home. The concept of work-life integration allows you to blend all your responsibilities, from caring for children to attending a webinar. But why should those things remain in separate boxes, particularly if you’re working from home? The lines between personal and professional time have been blurred, due in part to the lasting effects of the pandemic.” Read the full article here

Paris Olympics A-to-Z for Climbing Industry Insiders

As our sport, community and industry anticipate climbing’s second appearance in the Summer Olympic Games—following Sport Climbing’s debut at the Tokyo Olympics—there is perhaps even more excitement and hype than last time. After all, we now have gold medallists defending their titles, and there are now two sets of medals to earn—one for Boulder & Lead, one for Speed. The decision to give Speed its own medal was warmly received, and many hope that momentum will continue and we will see Boulder and Lead split into separate medals in the future, as well. But this summer, all eyes are on Paris… In total, 68 of the world’s best climbing athletes (34 women, 34 men) representing 22 countries and five continents are expected to compete in Paris. Countless articles on the subject have been written by climbing and non-endemic media, and we’ve curated the best of the bunch below. Without further ado, here is everything you need to know about Sport Climbing’s second appearance in the Olympic Games. (In tandem with this article, be sure to check out our media resource for climbing gyms here.)

Paris Olympics Media Resource for Climbing Gyms

If the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics taught us anything, it was that Olympic momentum equates to unprecedented interest in climbing. Not only did climbing’s Olympic debut (in 2021) result in many people of all ages wanting to head to their local gym to give climbing a try, it also prompted many local media outlets to reach out to the closest climbing gym for a report on the sport’s surge in popularity.  It’s likely that the forthcoming Paris Olympics (July 26-Aug 11) will be preceded by the same widespread interest from media outlets in climbing. In many cases, reporters will reach out to climbing gyms in hopes of not only learning about the fundamentals of climbing (What is bouldering? What is speed climbing? etc.), but also about climbing’s statistical uptick in mainstream culture, the profusion of gyms around the country, and some insight on climbing’s Olympic format and the qualified Olympians, specifically.
OnSite
We want to help you be well-suited to speak on those topics, if/when the media reaches out to your gym. We also want to help your gym get positive press and publicity in conjunction with climbing’s Olympic lead-up this summer. So, we’ve put together a “cheat sheet,” of sorts, that can hopefully act as a reference guide for questions that your gym might be asked by members of the press in the next month or so. (Click here to download the fact sheet, and more Paris Olympics-related resources for climbing industry insiders can be found here.) We hope this media reference guide proves useful as a quick and handy tool when talking with reporters. It would be greatly appreciated if you could cite Climbing Business Journal as the source for some of the various statistics, as we worked hard to gather the data that is listed in this sheet. But mostly we’re just as psyched as you that the Paris Olympics will bring new positive publicity to climbing…and to your gym. Sincerely, The Editors at Climbing Business Journal Climbing Media Fact Sheet for Paris Olympic Games

Trango Appoints Industry Veteran Stefan Yuhasz as Pacific Northwest Sales Rep

image of Stefan Yuhasz Trango, the Colorado-based designer and manufacturer of premier climbing gear and holds, proudly welcomes industry veteran Stefan Yuhasz as the brand’s sales rep for the Pacific Northwest region. Yuhasz will manage accounts in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana for Trango. Additionally, as Trango is the sole US distributor for Tenaya footwear, Yuhasz will work to enhance the premiere climbing shoe brand’s visibility and market share in the Pacific Northwest. A Massachusetts native who honed his skills on New England granite, Yuhasz has spent over half his life climbing and working in the industry. “Whether bouldering in Farley, sport climbing in Rumney, or tackling the granite domes of North Conway, I spent my younger years obsessed with climbing,” says Yuhasz. “Climbing opened a door to a life of exploration that changed my trajectory. It has led to countless stories and lifelong friendships. Ultimately, climbing brought me to Washington state, where you can find me climbing at some of my favorite places like Index or Leavenworth.” “We are thrilled to welcome Stefan to the Trango sales team,” says Keith Patterson, Trango Vice President. “Our sales reps are known for their strong support of local climbing communities and their expertise in equipment, holds, and customer service. Stefan excels in all these areas, and we are excited to have him represent the brand in the Pacific Northwest.” Yuhasz brings extensive experience in climbing and climbing gyms. The Seattle-based, USAC level 4 route setter also serves as Head Setter for Seattle Bouldering Project. “I have held almost every job in a climbing gym,” Yuhasz shares. “I started at the front desk at my local gym and then progressed to coach, guide, and ultimately route setter, where I have spent the majority of my career. Like my personal climbing, setting has taken me all over the country, and I have had the honor of collaborating with dozens of setters, both local and international. Four years ago, I moved west, like many East Coasters, with bigger mountains in sight.” Yuhasz has been a fan of Trango products both professionally and personally for years and is eager to share his knowledge with the brand’s gym and retail partners. “I believe that whether it’s a gym or local gear shop, we only succeed if they succeed, and I aim to offer the products and knowledge they need to be successful,” says Yuhasz. His primary goal is to support Trango’s gym and retail partners by providing excellent service while staying true to the spirit of the climbing community. “Trango has always valued its relationship with the climbing community and those in it,” acknowledges Yuhasz. “The brand has stayed true to the foundation of what makes this community unique. Our industry is a big part of our community, and I am excited to be part of a company that values the people who make it up.” About Trango: Founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 1991, Trango is an athlete-driven brand dedicated to challenging the status quo of climbing and advancing indoor gym technology. In addition to designing and producing premier climbing equipment, Trango is the sole US distributor for Tenaya climbing shoes. At Trango, we create innovative equipment that climbers trust. Our company is passionate about solution-oriented products that help climbers pursue the sport we love. You can count on Trango gear to deliver something extra, something special, that will contribute to your climbing adventure, indoors or out.
