The Opportunity:
As the Head Route Setter, you’ll be at the heart of shaping the climbing experience at the Oval! From crafting exciting and challenging routes to mentoring a team of passionate Route Setters, you’ll ensure the wall stays fresh, fun, and safe for everyone. Whether you’re designing routes that push athletes to new heights or ones that bring smiles to recreational climbers, your creativity and leadership will keep the climbing community energized and engaged. Plus, you’ll manage all the gear that keeps our wall top-notch and collaborate on making big decisions for future climbing projects. Safety, fun, and community will be in your hands!
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:
- Leading and promoting a culture of excellence.
- Hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating route setters to ensure high standards of performance and safety.
- Creating and managing an annual route-setting calendar that serves both recreational and high-performance climbers.
- Designing routes that enhance athlete performance, inspire excitement, and maintain recreational climber engagement.
- Acting as the main contact for Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC) and Sport Climbing BC (SCBC) athletes using Oval facilities.
- Collaborating with the Head Climbing Coach to design events and specialized terrain for CEC/SCBC athletes, focusing on development in the Learning to Win and Winning for a Living stages.
- Engaging with CEC and SCBC athletes to provide updates on current routes, training environments, and sport-specific events.
- Managing inventory and capital budgets, including ordering holds and volumes.
- Ensuring the climbing wall is properly maintained and adheres to industry safety standards.
- Maintaining organization of hold storage areas and tools to ensure cleanliness and efficiency.
- Gathering feedback from climbers and other stakeholders to continuously improve route setting.
- Providing route setting support for competitions and high-performance teams, such as the National Team.
- Collaborating with marketing and communications to promote the climbing wall and route-setting programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Your Schedule At The Oval Will Be:
- A 37.5-hour work week.
- Typically, Monday – Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.
- Approximately 65% hands-on-tasks and 35% administrative work.
The Qualification You Bring To This Role Include:
- Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field i.e. human kinetics, kinesiology, physical education, or equivalent sport sciences, considered an asset.
- 5+ years experience route setting.
- 2+ years experience as a head setter.
- 2+ years experience route setting for competitions.
- ACMG CGI level 2 or equivalent.
- Exceptional skills in motivation, supervision and customer service.
- Aerial Work Platform certification (ability to drive a boom lift).
- Standard First Aid and CPR.
- Must be able to complete a successful Criminal Record Check.

Salary and Benefits: $58,278 – $72,847 (dependent on experience and qualifications).
