    ASSISTANT GYM MANAGER – NORTHEAST PORTLAND

    Location: in-person; 21 NE 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97232
    Hours: 40 hours/week; full time, hourly, non-exempt
    Pay Rate: $23.08 – $24.52/hour depending on experience
    Position Start Date: Open until filled

    General Description

    Portland Rock Gym is looking for an Assistant Gym Manager for our full-service Northeast location. This is a full-time position with benefits. Since 1987, the mission of Portland Rock Gym is to teach and train well-rounded, life-long rock climbers indoors, and out at the crags, as well as celebrate and preserve our local cliffs and boulders through community involvement. We are currently looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, fun, and passionate climber to continue to help uphold our high standard of customer service, maintain a welcoming facility, and be a part of the PRG crew as our Northeast gym’s Assistant Gym Manager. The ideal candidate will help provide our staff team with reliable support, and mentorship. They will help support the Gym Manager as a team player and willing collaborator.

    Responsibilities
    Work closely with the Gym Manager to ensure the successful day-to-day operation and direct oversight of the following departments and their respective personnel:

    • Front desk
    • Retail
    • Climbing wall instruction
    • Janitorial
    • Facility maintenance

    Personnel management in each of the above areas means you are responsible for helping the Gym Manager to:

    • Maintain a full and capable staff through the hiring, training and managing of personnel.
    • Maintain a positive and welcoming work environment for all employees.
    • Report employees’ time & attendance
    • Compile regular employee reviews and escalate issues as needed
    • Assist with staff meetings, monthly staff climb nights, and 2 employee parties per year.
    • Execute and enforce our policies and procedures as per our staff manual. Lend your experience and voice to policy discussions.

    Requirements

    • 2+ years of top-rope belay experience
    • Regularly work evenings. Occasional odd hours are required to run special events
    • Work every-other weekend or equivalent.
    • Be well organized, efficient, and professional
    • Be a team player and willing collaborator
    • Be able to occasionally work any of the gym’s operating hours to understand the gym’s various communities
    • Be competent with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
    • Have a Highschool Diploma or GED + Some College
    • Have at least 6 months of paid leadership experience
    • Have strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Have prior experience in a customer service focused industry (e.g. retail, hospitality, fitness, or food service)

    In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following

    • Prior management experience in retail or service
    • Previous full-service climbing gym employment
    • Working knowledge of Rock Gym Pro software
    • Lead climbing and lead belaying experience
    • Climbing Wall Association CWI Instructor or equivalent
