Climb Insider: etiquette, comp news, staff stuff

Just a few thoughts

Etiquette at the gym and crag is a hot topic for many of us, so it’s nice to see two articles this week addressing this. Plus a few explorations of big issues like mentorship, pressure as a female climber, and ending a pro career. Congrats to Helen Gillett and Hugo Hoyer for winning USAC Bouldering Team Trials last week (results, videos), as well as the many athletes who competed in the USAC Paraclimbing Nationals (results, video), both held at Sportrock Rio. JOB SEEKER TIPS:

Why you’re having trouble finding a job (and what to do about it) By CareerBuilder “Many experts say you should spend as much time searching for a job as you would in full-time employment. You get out of your job search what you put into it, so if your efforts are half-hearted, you’re unlikely to get the results you want. Make sure you’re devoting 40 hours a week to your job search while you’re unemployed. If you’re looking for a job while you’re still employed, 40 hours is unrealistic. However, you should still devote time to your job search in the mornings and evenings. “ Read the full article here

New Bouldering, Dry Tooling Gym Is a Gateway to the Outdoors

Climb Monadnock owners Ryan McGuire and Michelle Gaffney
Climb Monadnock combines multiple areas of expertise of co-owners Ryan McGuire and Michelle Gaffney, blending guiding, instruction, climbing and fitness in a compact space. (All photos courtesy of Climb Monadnock)

Climb Monadnock Keene, New Hampshire

Specs: In mid-December last year, Climb Monadnock opened near downtown Keene, New Hampshire, after co-owners Ryan McGuire and Michelle Gaffney identified a need for a climbing gym in their community. “The closest gym was over 30 minutes away,” McGuire said about the project’s early days. Since then, two new climbing gyms—Climb Monadnock and neighbor GraniteWorks, which opened in 2024—have stepped in to fill that void.
Elevate Climbing Walls
Keene has been Gaffney’s home for ten years and, because McGuire now resides in the town, they felt it was the right moment to open a gym in the area. As a mountain guide, McGuire had also been “looking for some more stability” and was hoping to travel less. Operating a climbing gym fit the bill, and it afforded an opportunity to incorporate guiding into the business plan. The team found an existing space “in the same commercial building as Michelle’s crossfit gym, CrossFit Monadnock,” McGuire says, and soon Rockwerx and Evolution Builders were constructing the new climbing gym’s 12-foot walls.
Bouldering and dry tooling walls at Climb Monadnock
In addition to guided climbing trips outdoors, Climb Monadnock provides room for bouldering and dry tooling indoors.
McGuire has been a guide for almost ten years and works through the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Alpine Guide program. All guides that work for Climb Monadnock are AMGA trained, with the goal of ensuring “a high standard of instruction,” the website details. McGuire says guiding is “a great way to diversify your business,” but notes it is essential “to have terrain to guide in.” Fortunately, Keene is in proximity to several rock climbing and ice climbing areas, which prompted the gym to offer multiple outdoor programs and courses for climbers of all levels, from Mt. Washington 101 to Denali Prep. However, McGuire notes guiding does come with “an additional expense from insurance and permits,” so he recommends pricing accordingly.
Elevate Climbing Walls
Climb Monadnock is a 2,900-square-foot bouldering facility with 1,512 square feet of climbable terrain, including a dedicated dry tooling wall. Amenities at the gym range from fitness equipment to a consignment shop for used gear, and programming options include youth camps and an after-school club for younger climbers. The gym also hosts Wilderness First Aid courses and Gym-to-Crag education, and the owners are planning to host workshops for anchor building and dry tooling.

Among the services at the new gym is a retail store for buying and selling outdoor and climbing gear.

We are passionate about helping folks achieve goals or take on new experiences, and we hope to do that inside the gym walls and outdoors with our guide service.” – Ryan McGuire, co-owner of Climb Monadnock

Touchstone Workers United Win Union Election – First Southern California Climbing Gyms To Unionize

OnSite Acquires DÉLIRE Climbing Walls

DÉLIRE Climbing Walls, which has built climbing gyms and walls throughout Canada and the United States, is now under the ownership of Quebec neighbor OnSite Climbing. (Pictured: DÉLIRE walls and flooring at Rose Bloc in Quebec; photo by Olivier Dumas, courtesy of DÉLIRE)
Montreal-based gym builder OnSite Climbing recently acquired the wall-manufacturing division of Quebec-based DÉLIRE. In an official message addressed to “clients and community,” former co-owner of DÉLIRE Climbing Walls, Lisa Lajoie, wrote, “After 20 years in the climbing gym manufacturing business, we are pleased to announce today that DÉLIRE Climbing Walls will pass its operation to OnSite.” Lajoie added, “We are happy to be able to pass our knowledge and products to a manufacturer from here who believes in the strength of our teams. Rest assured that the essence of DÉLIRE Climbing Walls will live on through OnSite and that you will be served with the same interest and professionalism.”
Trango Holds Pardners
As a result of the acquisition, the wall-building component of DÉLIRE will be overseen by Francis Larose, OnSite’s co-founder and CEO. However, the DÉLIRE brand name will not be part of the acquisition, and DÉLIRE will retain its climbing facilities—the DÉLIRE Escalade side of the business, which includes four indoor gyms and an outdoor bouldering site. We will add Delire products, old and new clients to our OnSite catalog,” Larose told CBJ. “We are happy to now offer wooden structure and opaque color with texture. Also, we are looking to revive [DÉLIRE’s] old ‘fiber volumes,’ which the brand used to manufacture.” Larose explained that Onsite will also be able to scale up production to meet increasing demand, specifying that production capacity will be doubled as a result of the acquisition.

Sender One Finishes New LA Bouldering Gym in Former Theater

Sender One, a California climbing gym chain with five open facilities—including a team training center—and three planned gyms on the way, opened its Westwood location last week. Retrofitted to the former Mann Festival Theatre in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, the new bouldering gym—a pre-COVID project that was first announced in 2019—is situated near the UCLA campus as well as multiple restaurants, cafes, and entertainment services.

Features of the 8,000-square-foot Westwood facility include a wide range of bouldering terrain on the main floor and a 2,000-square-foot mezzanine with training boards, fitness and yoga. The multi-colored Walltopia climbing walls were inspired in part by “the uniqueness of the original space,” a press release detailed, calling to mind film strips, directional lighting, and projectors.

The walls and interior of the Westwood gym were designed to “preserve a theatre-like feel,” per the press release, and the marquee at the building’s entrance was preserved “to pay tribute to the once-popular Westwood venue.”
In a blog post ahead of the gym’s opening, Alice Kao, co-owner of Sender One and a UCLA alumna herself, said, “At the open house on 2/1, we had over 300 people walk in between 5 and 9pm! There were tons of students from UCLA and lots of people from the surrounding Westwood community…We are so excited to finally open this gym! We’ve been trying to open this gym since 2019.  There were delays due to COVID, then delays due to the city permitting issues. We were supposed to open this past summer but we ran into a major permitting issue half way through construction and we had to stop work, rip out some of our work and re-do a bunch of work. Now we are finally at the finish line…” Later this year, Sender One is expected to complete two more gym projects in the Los Angeles area—a 9,000-square-foot bouldering facility (Huntington Beach) and 28,000-square-foot full-service facility (Lakewood). And in 2025, the 24,000-square-foot Aliso Viejo facility, Sender One’s fourth full-service gym, is slated to open.
