The Longest Climb: A Memoir of Love, Mountaineering, and Healing

image of the longest climb book An inspiring, moving, and unblinking view of a renowned climber who refuses to turn his back on the mountains after a life-altering injury. Born in Bolton, England, Paul Pritchard started climbing when he was 16 years old. In time, he became one of the foremost British climbers of the 1980s and 1990s, climbing difficult routes across the United Kingdom and around the world, including the East Face of Central Tower in Torres del Paine, Patagonia, the first ascent of the West Face of Mount Asgard on Baffin Island, Trango Tower in northern Pakistan, and multiple attempts on the then-unclimbed Shark’s Fin on Meru Peak, in the Indian Himalayan region. On Friday, February 13, 1998, Paul’s life was dramatically altered when he was struck in the head by a falling boulder while climbing the Totem Pole, a slender sea stack off the coast of Tasmania. He received a traumatic head injury and was left suffering from hemiplegia, which has robbed his right side of movement and continues to play tricks with his speech and memory. A remarkable story that highlights life’s surprising gifts and crucial lessons, The Longest Climb chronicles Paul’s inspiring journey back to life and reminds us all that “When we spend time in the mountains, we do not escape from our woes. We come home and learn how to accept them.” Purchase your copy here: https://rmbooks.com/book/the-longest-climb/

Nonprofit Training Gym in the Netherlands Finds Its Niche

Bouldering at Wildflower Climbing Gym
Founded in 2021, Wildflower moved to a new facility last November, but what hasn’t changed is the nonprofit’s focus on providing local climbers a “community-based bouldering gym and training center” that’s “based on equality and sustainability.” (All images courtesy of Wildflower Climbing Gym)

Wildflower Climbing Gym Leiden, Netherlands

Specs: Wildflower Climbing Gym is a nonprofit bouldering gym in Leiden, Netherlands. Owned and operated by the Wildflower Climbing Foundation—a team consisting of Marloes Vink, Jørg Frankens and professional climber Tiba Vroom—the gym first opened its doors in October 2021. The owners are all Leiden residents and wanted a smaller, training-focused space close to home where they could develop their climbing. “Just like everywhere, there is a massive increase in new bouldering gyms in the Netherlands,” Vroom explained, noting an uptick in larger facilities in particular. The owners saw a niche for Wildflower, a “nonprofit, community-based bouldering gym and training center” designed “for motivated climbers to train and improve,” Vroom said.
Elevate Climbing Walls
According to Vroom, finding an available building with the right size, height and open space was difficult. So, when the team discovered their first facility in the project’s early days, they adjusted their construction plans and opening timeline to snag the location. In November 2023, the gym moved to a new facility that now features “spray walls, slabs, a jump system wall, MoonBoard, and of course all the training equipment,” an Instagram post detailed. The gym also offers a variety of youth programs and fitness classes for climbing and movement training, such as classes for mobility and strength training, women’s MoonBoarding classes, and Capoeira. “These classes make our community really tight, and it is very fun to climb in a motivated group of people with a trainer helping you improve your climbing,” shared Vroom.
Training in one of the fitness areas at Wildflower
A training gym as much as a bouldering gym, Wildflower has dedicated fitness and training areas positioned near the climbing walls throughout the facility.
In operating a nonprofit gym, the owners also aim to put equality and sustainability at the forefront of their day-to-day operations. “When it comes to equality, we have included measures such as making our gym fully gender-neutral, supporting climbing for mentally and physically disabled persons, adjusting our prices for people who have less to spend, etc.,” Vroom said. “This way, we take down barriers for new or existing climbers to get more out of our sport.” In terms of sustainability, the gym uses green energy and educates climbers on climbing responsibly outdoors. “We organize courses and retreats to teach people how to rock climb while preserving nature, and we share things about it on our social media. We believe that climbing gyms have the responsibility to teach their climbers how to climb well in nature, as they are creating the people who will be going to the crags,” continued Vroom.
Trango Holds Pardners
For others looking to start a nonprofit climbing gym, Vroom recommends staying flexible throughout that process and connected to the member base. “Don’t be afraid to change [the plan] if reality is different,” she said. “Especially with nonprofits, it’s all about community. [The community members] are the ones who carry your business and make your time worthwhile. Make sure to give them the attention that they need and ask them for help if you need it…Listen to your climbers! They are the ones enjoying your gym every day.”
A climbing class at Wildflower
In addition to fitness and climbing classes, Wildflower offers gym-to-crag education intended to “teach people how to rock climb while preserving nature.”

It looks like a place where we (the crew) can do our own training and teach people how to train, as well. The gym has to be able to financially support itself and the trainers that contribute to it. That is what I believe to be a very successful Wildflower.” – Tiba Vroom, Co-Founder and Co-Manager of Wildflower Climbing Gym

Tenaya, the Spanish-based designer and manufacturer of premier climbing footwear, is proud to announce its title sponsorship of the AAC’s (American Alpine Club’s) 2024 Craggin’ Classic Series. Tenaya, which is exclusively distributed in the US by Colorado-based Trango, will be the title sponsor for all six of the 2024 Craggin’ Classic events.   The 2024 Craggin’ Classic Events are scheduled for Ozarks (Bentonville, AR, May 10-12); Devil’s Lake (Baraboo, WI, August 23-25); Rumney (Rumney, NH, Sept 6-8); New River Gorge (Lansing, WV, Sept 13-15); Shelf Road (Cañon City, CO, October 11-13); Bishop (Bishop, CA, Oct 18-20).  “Since my first trip to Yosemite in the 1990’s, I have felt the inclusivity of the US climbing community,” says Tenaya founder, Jose Luis Garcia Gallego. “We are very pleased to be a part of the highly popular Craggin’ Classics and look forward to not only the climbing at these historic crags, but also the interaction with so many attendees from North America and all over the world. We thank the AAC for the opportunity to be a part of the fun and education.”   Trango president, Chris Klinke, also expresses his full support of the AAC Craggin’ Classic/AAC and Tenaya partnership. “As Tenaya’s US distributor, we’ve experienced the incredible reception of Tenaya shoes in the US climbing community,” says Klinke. “One thing that we’ve noticed about Tenaya shoes is that they elevate the climbing experience on so many different types of rock, for everyone from beginners to experts. We think Tenaya is the perfect title sponsor for the Craggin’ Classic, and we think the attendees will agree.”

The AAC’s Craggin’ Classic Series of events began in 2010. They provide a fun, safe, and inclusive opportunity for people of all skill levels and backgrounds to celebrate climbing (and climbing culture). In addition to taking place in some of the U.S.’s most iconic climbing destinations, the multi-day festivals provide camping opportunities, climbing clinics, riveting guest speakers, product demos and scrumptious meals that often feature locally-sourced drinks and food.  The events are known for their “skill” courses, which are taught by professional athletes and guides, film screenings, and festive evening entertainment.   Tenaya will provide a full fleet of performance climbing shoes for attendees to demo, as well as some of the world’s top climbers, including Chris Sharma, Jimmy Webb and Drew Ruana, to participate in select clinics, presentations, and of course, climbing.   The Craggin’ Classic Series attracts over 3,500 participants annually, from beginners to experts, with attendees from all over the world. The Series brings together more than 50 outdoor industry brands, as well as the expertise from nearly two dozen local climbing organizations. Each season, there are more than 100 clinics, first-run films, and compelling, educational speakers.

Redpoint HQ Software Hits Gym Market

Redpoint HQ
Software guru Andy Laakman, the original mastermind behind RGP, now has a new gym management software—Redpoint HQ (pictured)—that hit the market this year. (All images courtesy of Redpoint HQ)
Andy Laakman, the founder of Rock Gym Pro (RGP)—the most widely-used gym management software in the climbing industry in North America—recently launched a new gym management software, called Redpoint HQ. The software has been in development since late 2022 and allows gyms to sell day passes, sell retail merchandise, track customer check-ins, manage recurring (or prepaid) memberships, manage inventory, and manage programs and bookings, among other features.
OnSite
Since founding RGP in 2008, Laakman served as a key developer at the software company—which was sold to Togetherwork in 2018—before he and two other key staff members departed from RGP in 2020. Laakman told CBJ that the team behind the creation of Redpoint HQ has been in the climbing industry since 2005 and has a “deep understanding” of gym operations, from that of a “local bouldering gym” to multi-facility gym chains. “It’s truly dream software by a team that knows deeply how gyms operate—from the front desk all the way to the back office,” added Laakman. Laakman explained that Redpoint HQ was designed with three principles in mind—to be fast (i.e., with the fewest clicks possible in operation at the front desk), to be easy (tailored to the unique software needs of customers, staff and managers), and to be flexible (allowing gym operators to configure the system to the needs of their specific business).
Redpoint HQ in use at Edgeworks
The new Redpoint HQ software is already in use at Edgeworks’ Bellevue, Seattle and Tacoma locations.
Redpoint HQ is currently live at the three Edgeworks Climbing + Fitness gyms in Washington. Laakman says that Redpoint HQ’s pricing will be competitive with other products on the market. Updates and onboarding dates can be obtained by joining Redpoint HQ’s mailing list at redpointhq.com.
