The Assistant Director of Programs is responsible for supporting and guiding the Climbing Programs department, including Youth Team, Adult programs, Camps and Private Coaching, at a regional level. This individual will report to the Director of Programs and work with local program and gym leadership to support continued program growth and efficiency, instructor/coach development and retention, and to support Movement’s mission and core values as they relate to climbing programs. As with all team members, they are expected to embody Movement’s mission and core values, leading by example.
This position will focus on supporting Climbing Programs in the San Francisco Bay Area with some travel to support our Portland and Fountain Valley locations. This is an on-site position with the expectation of being present at a gym in the region 5 days a week, including evenings and weekends as needed.
What you’ll be doing
Ensure exceptional customer experiences
- Accountable for gym level managers growing and/or maintaining high quality youth and adult programs across all locations in your region, satellite gyms or other regions as needed.
- In partnership with the Director of Programs and region’s Senior Director craft and share program vision, creating exceptional experiences to support membership growth
- Execute region-wide events and attend USAC competitions as needed
Ensure exceptional team member experiences
- Support Climbing and Youth Team Managers in ensuring quality of programming and development of team members through training plans/processes and regular auditing of classes and team practices
- In partnership with the Gym Director, provide ongoing professional development and support to Climbing and Youth Team Managers including management and instruction/coaching skills, as well as support in business & financial management & reporting tools.
- Craft and share program vision with team members, managers and leadership, ensuring alignment and execution of exceptional customer experiences
- Assist the Director of Programs with creating, updating and organizing curricula, training plans, instructor training tools, and other resources that will support continued growth of Movement programs.
- Travel to satellite gyms and other regions to provide support on program roll out, training, and professional development as needed.

- Accountable for creating and meeting budgets and other financial success metrics
- Support Gym Directors and Climbing and Youth Team Managers in understanding reporting and evaluating the effectiveness of the gym’s offerings and staffing in meeting our overall goals.
What you’ll bring to the role
- 3+ years experience as an Instructor/Coach or Program/Youth Team Manager for climbing programs.
- Passion for Youth and Adult Climbing Programs and supporting the continued growth and development of instructors/coaches and the program.
- Ability to build rapport, cast vision, communicate, and lead changes effectively with multiple key players across multiple locations and the country.
- Excellent organization and administrative skills.
- Solid computer skills (web-based applications, Word, Excel, POS applications).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Dependability, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.
- A strong value on collaboration and working as a team.
- Consistent positive energy and empathy.
- Drive to build community through transformative moments.
Bonus points for
- Previous experience managing programs and working to meet budget and performance goals.
- 3+ years USAC coaching experience, ability to coach youth climbers of all ages at the National level in Lead/TR and bouldering disciplines.
- Experience coaching speed climbing.

Additional Details
- At this time the role will be focused 70% on the youth team program, and the remaining time split between other youth and adult programming
- This is a full-time, exempt position.
- Compensation for this role starts at $74k-$84k annually and may increase based on experience and qualifications.
- Candidate must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area
- This is an on-site position with the expectation of being present at a gym in the region 5 days a week, including evenings and weekends as needed. There is also travel to Portland, Oregon and Fountain Valley, CA for a few days up to once per quarter.
