Job Summary
As a Route Setter, you play a key role in crafting an engaging and inspiring climbing experience for our community. This position requires creativity, collaboration, and a passion for continuous improvement. Working closely with the Route Setting Manager and other setters, you will be responsible for setting and maintaining routes, ensuring wall safety and cleanliness, and actively engaging with the community to enhance their climbing experience.
Responsibilities
Route Setting & Maintenance
- Set creative and engaging boulder problems and routes that cater to a diverse climbing community.
- Experiment with different setting styles and techniques to keep climbing challenges fresh and innovative.
- Maintain climbing terrain by ensuring:
- All loose holds are tightened and repaired within 24 business hours of discovery.
- All required holds are properly set screwed.
- All wall surfaces are thoroughly cleaned before setting.
- Regularly inspect climbing terrain and gear to ensure safety and quality.
Community Engagement & Development
- Support and engage with community members by participating in Route Setting Workshops and other events.
- Encourage diversity and accessibility in climbing by considering the needs of children, smaller climbers, and adaptive climbers.
- Actively seek and implement feedback to improve climbing experiences.
Safety & Risk Management
- Follow best practices for work area safety and risk management.
- Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of climbing terrain and equipment.
- Uphold BKB’s high standards of quality and safety in all aspects of setting and maintenance.
Collaboration & Professional Growth
- Work closely with the Route Setting Manager and fellow setters to develop creative and challenging climbs.
- Identify and support the strengths of peers, encouraging professional development.
- Stay informed about industry developments and new trends in climbing and route setting.
Qualifications
- Experience in route setting with a strong understanding of movement and climbing styles.
- Rope access skills and basic route setting knowledge.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, solution-focused attitude.
- Ability to forerun at least V7 and 5.12a.
- Availability for occasional nights and weekends, especially for competition setting and special events.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and follow direction.
