Position Summary

The Coordinator of Rock Climbing at the University of Oregon is a full time, 12-month position in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation. The Coordinator provides leadership in the management of the indoor climbing facility, including rock climbing lessons, youth rock climbing camps, community programs, special events, and teaching Physical Education Rock Climbing courses.

The Coordinator is responsible for the operations, staffing, program planning, budget management, and facilities and equipment oversight for the Rock District which includes a 30 feet tall rock wall with more than 2,800 square feet of top-rope and lead climbing, and a bouldering wall. The Coordinator analyzes data on participation and assists with the assessment of the rock climbing program.

The Coordinator supervises approximately 30 student employees which includes hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation and development. The person in this position will lead by example and maintain the highest ethical standards within the department and the university.

This position reports to the Associate Director for Facilities for all position responsibilities with the exception of teaching. The position reports to the Assistant Director for Physical Education/Outdoor Pursuits Program for the academic teaching responsibilities.

This position is required to obtain and maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certification and Climbing Wall Instructor certification.

May be required to work some evening and weekend hours as needed.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, or related field.
• Two (2) years’ experience working as a manager or supervisor of a rock climbing facility.
• Two (2) years’ supervision experience, including hiring, training and evaluating staff, managing employee work schedules and timesheets.
• Climbing Wall Instructor certification.

Professional Competencies

• Knowledge of computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Fusion, e-mail, and database tracking).
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and provide strong customer service.
• Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, or related field.
• Experience instructing climbing courses with a structured, multi-class session curriculum.
• A comprehensive understanding of the management of an indoor climbing facility, operations and services.
• Climbing Wall Instructor Provider certification through the Professional Climbing Instructor’s Association, American Mountain Guide Association, Climbing Wall Association, or other nationally recognized organization.
• Demonstrated experience working with a youth camp or youth sports program in family/youth rock climbing.
• Evidence of leadership experience and/or a commitment to student learning and development.
• Risk management experience and competence in policy and procedure development and implementation.
