Job Description
Bolder is looking for a Coach/Head Route Setter to join our team! This individual will be responsible for coaching teams and individuals for all levels and all things related to the setting. From the boulders and walls themselves, setting crew management, to hold ordering and planning, in addition to some facility maintenance duties, this individual will also have coaching responsibilities with our teams, like teaching technique efficient ways to go through the climbs in the gym in order to prepare them for different competitions, identifying strengths and weaknesses of climbers, planning effective training menus, mentoring climbers and leading them to competitions. Coach/Head Route Setter will be expected to engage with the community at Bolder in order to gain a better understanding of the wants and needs of our clientele and must be able to work collaboratively with the gym owners to ensure the route setting is consistent and maintained at the highest level of quality.
Term
This is a permanent full-time position with a 3-month probationary period with review before moving forward.
Any applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents must have or be able to obtain a work permit; the term of employment will be dependent on these terms.
Coaching Responsibilities
● Identifying climbers’ strengths and weaknesses and analyzing and evaluating climbers’ abilities
● Planning and developing effective training programs and sessions to enhance climbers’ abilities and achieve their objectives
● Communicating with athletes to schedule training sessions and answer questions
● Designing, developing, coordinating and executing competition simulations as part of the preparation for real competitions for the team climbers
● Setting climbing routes suitable to climbers’ levels, abilities and objectives
● Adjusting and changing climbs according to the necessity of the athletes
● Motivating and helping climbers prepare for competitions physically and mentally
● Developing suitable strategies for competitions based on climbers’ level and their objectives
● Participating in competitions as a coach, observe climber’s performance and provide feedback and advice during competitions
● Monitoring and evaluating climbers’ performance and revising training plans based on their performance
● Mentoring and supporting climbers throughout the competitions
● Coaching team climbers through different routes and boulders and teaching them the proper technique to solve each one of those
● Providing competitors with comprehensive guidance for rules and regulations Route setting Responsibilities
● Setting boulders and leading the setting team 3 times a week, keeping records of route setting and boulders, and preparing reports
● Setting for events and competitions
● Planning and implementing the facility setting schedule by section
● Scheduling the route setting team and communicating this schedule to all team members with appropriate notice
● Mentoring and training route setters to push professional development and maintain a culture of constant learning
● Conducting safety training to increase safety awareness and enhance risk management in the facility
● Supervising other route setters to ensure the safety guidelines are followed
● Planning and placing annual hold orders; working in conjunction with the owners to ensure the predetermined budget is being followed
● Communicating with members on a regular basis both to develop personal connections and to receive feedback on the setting Other duties related to the position may be assigned as necessary.
Qualifications and Required Experience Applicants should have:
● A passion for climbing and fitness
● High School Diploma or equivalent ● A minimum of 3 years of coaching experience
● A minimum of 5 years of route setting experience; leadership setting experience preferred
● Have pervious experiences in competing at least regional level, preferably national/international level
● International competition setting experience (Preferred)
● International competition coaching experience (Preferred)
● A high level of knowledge about climbing movement; capacity to climb and set boulders graded V9 or above
● Profound knowledge and understanding of climbing competition rules and regulations
● Ability to lift and/or carry at least 100lbs
● Attention to detail
● An excellent understanding and care for safety practices in route setting
● Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to the public and internally with other staff and management.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
● Enthusiasm to be part of the Bolder Climbing team
● Supervision skills to lead a climbing team and a team of route setters
● CPR/First Aid Certificates
● Working at heights certification (Preferred)
● CWA working at heights Certification (Preferred)
● Mobile Elevating Work Platform certificate (Preferred)
● Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word ● Willingness to travel for occasional competitions and assignments Benefits

● $29.50 CAD/hour to $35 CAD/hour
