Company Overview:
Brimstone Boulders is a small bouldering gym in an old church in Hood River, Oregon, dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels.
Come early 2025, we will double the square footage of our existing gym, which will give us space for a designated kids learning zone, fitness area, bigger barre and yoga studio and climbing training center.
Position Overview:
The Assistant Coach will work with the head coach and existing team to shape and implement youth climbing programs as we enter this phase of expansion. In addition to a role with the competitive climbing team, responsibilities will include a range of youth-focused initiatives, including classes, camps, competitions and special events.
This position is ideal for an individual excited to grow with the company and dedicated to fostering a positive and educational environment for young climbers.
Pay:
$16.50-18 hourly depending on experience. This has the potential to increase as programs demonstrate success and profitability.
3 days per week averaging about 12 hours per week including competition weeks. Additional hours available upon taking on responsibilities (recreational youth programs, front desk, etc.)
Start Date:
Flexible. Must be willing to start in January 2025.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide hands-on coaching to youth climbers, making climbing fun and engaging with a focus on skill advancement and personal growth.
Assist the head coach with administrative duties, including monitoring attendance, tracking progress, organizing practice notes, and communicating with families.
Assist in carrying out and providing feedback with training and practice plans appropriate for a range of ages and ability levels.
Mitigate inherent risks involved with climbing.
Attend USAC events, outdoor climbing days, visits to other gyms and other extracurricular team activities.
Maintain visibility and positive relationships with all athletes and families.
Communicate team needs (competitions, outdoor climbing days, supplies, etc.) to the head coach in a timely manner.
Take initiative and collaborate with the team to foster after school programs, summer camps and other youth offerings.
Must Haves:
Experience working with youths of a variety of ages and backgrounds.
Experience in bouldering, top rope, and/or lead climbing.
Sound understanding of climbing techniques.
Basic knowledge of climbing products and tools.
Ability to pass a background check.
Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 30 lbs.
USAC coach certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.
CPR certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with athletes, parents, and other staff members with a drive to learn and take on new responsibilities as needed.
Nice to Haves:
Experience coaching competitive rock climbing.
AMGA SPI certification or higher.
CWI Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.
Experience using Rock Gym Pro.
Note: The right culture fit will get priority over specific climbing industry experience.
