Job Title: Head Youth Coach
Reports To: Director of Youth Programming and Route Setting
Description:
Climb Iowa Youth Team Coaches are held to a high standard, as they are the main influence in helping to shape and guide the next generation of Climb Iowa climbers. The role of the Head Youth Team Coach is integral to the function, growth, success, and potential of the Climb Iowa Youth Teams. The Head Youth Team Coach will work with any or all of the following: Approach, Summit, Apex and/or Zenith Climbing Team practices (up to the discretion of Director of Youth Programming and Route Setting).
The ideal employee will embody the Climb Iowa Purpose statement; to offer exceptional experiences by letting our passions motivate our actions. Specifically, the Climb Iowa Head Youth Coach is a qualified climber and experienced coach who is expected to help develop our youth customers, both as individuals and climbers, as well as guiding and growing our youth teams as integral parts of the Climb Iowa Community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Management of Youth Teams
- Assist in hiring, training, and evaluating all staff affiliated with Youth Teams.
- Developing curriculums for all Youth Teams.
- Create opportunities for kids to grow throughout the program.
- Creating a positive environment for youth.
- Foster team culture both in and out of practice.
- Create opportunities for kids to learn and explore their emotional resiliency.
- Coach and instruct youth from ages 4-18 years old.
USA Climbing Responsibilities
- Become and maintain USAC Level 2 Certification.
- Create USAC Rosters.
- Parent education in all aspects of team.
- Create practice comp programming.
- Travel and coach comps throughout the USAC season.
- Create education opportunities for parents to learn about the sport and the USAC membership platform (Vertical Life).
Communication
- Communicates regularly with the Director of Youth Programming and Route Setting.
- Communicates directly to Youth Team Supervisors.
- Communicate with Youth Team parents.
Practice Management
- Make sure employees are following protocol in all aspects of their job.
- Create a practice environment where all kids can be set up for success.
- Be a flexible leader in enforcing the practice structure.
- Teach belay classes to youth 11-13.
- Teach lead classes to youth 13+.
Other
- Be the gold standard in customer interactions
- Be a positive representative of Climb Iowa
- Be a staff liaison. Communicate to the Management Team feedback and concerns from Youth Team Coaches.
- Accept feedback from Management Team.
- Offer an exceptional experience by creating a positive and welcoming environment for all climbers.
- Be a stellar resource of climbing knowledge for the youth team.
- Treat all youth team climbers fairly and with respect.
- Follow all employee and gym rules while in the facility, whether working or not.
- Be communicative with the Director of Youth Programming and Route Setting regarding availability and scheduling.
- Possess an eagerness to expand your climbing expertise with the goal of becoming a more knowledgeable coach.
- Adhere to the Climb Iowa Coaches Agreement.
- Adhere to the Child Protection Training.
- Put the wellbeing of the youth climbers first.
Availability/Hours:
Scheduling and availability will vary and be assessed as facility and programming needs change. Weeknight availability on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5-9pm are required.
Hours will vary depending on programming needs. The Head Youth Coach will spend approx. 20 hours per week handling team and team-related duties. During competition travel weekends, weekly hours can increase to 30+ hours per week with additional compensation for travel expenses.
Route Setting hours are available in addition to coaching hours with approval from Director of Youth Programming and Route Setting.
Qualifications:
- Enthusiastic attitude towards climbing and our community.
- Ability to act with tact and diplomacy to a varied audience.
- Flexible schedule: availability during a variety of shifts throughout Climb Iowa regular business hours is preferred.
- Strong relationship building skills – customer, co-workers, and strategic partners.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Good detail orientated organizational skills.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft products, internet, email, and Redpoint HQ.
- Previous customer experience required.
- Ability to adhere to all rules and policies Climb Iowa has implemented.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
